TO SIWARD’S CROSS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Old cross, how many summers bright have flown
\nSince first was here up-reared thy sacred form;
\nHow many winters hast thou stood alone,
\nAnd braved the storm.<\/p>\n

Of those who shaped and fashioned thee with care,
\nFrom the rough block that midst the heather lay,
\nThe memory, like smoke upon the air,
\nHas passed away.<\/p>\n

At morn, when gladdened by the sun’s bright ray,
\nThe lark poured forth her mountain melody,
\nOft has the abbot, passing on his way,
\nGazed upon thee.<\/p>\n

When dusky night’s advance made daylight flee,
\nOr gathering mists the beaten track would hide,
\nThe lonely traveller, beholding thee,
\nHas found a guide.<\/p>\n

Long in the desert may’st thou stand, old cross,
\nAnd towards thee ne’er be stretched an unkind hand;
\nBut with thy coat of lichen grey and moss,
\nLong may’st thou stand!<\/p>\n
